The Mayor of Lakeshore doesn't want to delay such an important project but admits he is concerned about the location of the proposed Hydro One transmission line running through the Comber area.
Hydro One announced Monday that five new lines were being constructed. A line running through the Lakeshore Transmission Station is proposed to run through the commercial-industrial area in Comber.
"We would prefer to see that line north of the [Highway] 401, as opposed to south, coming through our commercial area, our industrial area, and bordering on our residential section," said Mayor Tom Bain.
Bain indicated the municipality has had several meetings with Hydro One, and councillors will have to discuss whether to take further action.
"We don't, certainly, want to delay the line in any way shape, or form, because it's needed not only for Lakeshore, it's needed for Windsor and all of Essex County, and Chatham-Kent," said Bain.
Hydro One still has to complete the Environmental Assessment process for the line. During Monday's announcement, Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of Energy Todd Smith, Steven Crawford said they won't be cutting any corners.
“While these measures will create efficiencies, I want to be clear they do not remove any obligation from Hydro One to meet the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act,” he said. “This will ensure each line is planned responsibly and in consultation with Indigenous and local communities.”
