The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has decided not to further investigate the injury of a Windsor man earlier this month.
The incident took place on March 14, near the Seminole branch of the Windsor Public Library. A man spotted a Windsor police vehicle nearby, remembered that he was wanted on outstanding warrants, then jumped on a bicycle and pedalled east down Seminole Street.
The man then turned south on Francois Street, where he dropped the bicycle and continued running. He then hopped a wooden fence, landed on a shed located on private property, then ended up on the ground.
The officers caught up to him minutes later and arrested him, then took him to hospital where he was treated for a broken foot.
SIU Director Joseph Martino said that it was obvious that the suspect caused his foot injury and that police were not responsible. The file was closed with no investigation set.
The SIU is a non-partisan, provincial government agency that is called when an incident involving law enforcement results in someone's injury, death, sexual assault, or the firing of a weapon. Once a law-enforcement agency calls in the SIU, civilian investigators invoke the mandate and take over the investigation.
