Windsor Polish Club steps up for Ukraine, hopes you will too

From this side of the globe, it may be hard to find something meaningful to do to help the now over 1-million Ukrainians who have fled their home, but the Polish Club of Windsor hopes you'll support their effort.

It's holding a pasta dinner on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. at the club's meeting hall on Langlois Avenue across from Lanspeary Park.

Margaret Holec is the club's president, and her family comes from Lubycza Krolewksa, a village not far from the border Poland shares with Ukraine. It is also one of the places where tens of thousands of people fleeing the war on foot are going to seek comfort.

"It's the first point of help at the moment. I am in touch with them, and they say they need medication. They need food. They need clothing for small kids," she says.

She has been in touch with family members since the start of the Russian invasion and says the town of just 5,000 has been overwhelmed with refugees.

"Nobody was prepared for the number of refugees, so there is a need for volunteers -- for lawyers. All the newcomers need to be documented. There's a tremendous need for people who can pretty much process this information," said Holec.

The town has come together. Women are cooking non-stop to feed those crossing the border, some of them having walked days to reach safety.

"It's devastating. It's sad. It's unbelievable," Holec expressed.

The public can come and eat at the club at $25 a plate or take the food home.

"We are trying to do our part to make sure nobody is left behind," she said. "Whatever we can do, we'll support them."
