Two dead from COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed two more lives in Windsor-Essex.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported Tuesday that a man in his 50s and a man in his 80s have passed away from COVID-19. This brings the regional death toll to 578 since the pandemic began almost two years ago.

The younger man was from the community, and the older man was in long-term care.

As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, Windsor-Essex's hospital systems reported a total of 43 patients in their care for COVID-19. Most are at Windsor Regional Hospital, which had 36 cases, and 21 of them admitted primarily for the virus. Twenty-four of those people are fully vaccinated from the virus, the rest are either not vaccinated or partially vaccinated. There are six patients in intensive care, with four of those having had two doses.

At Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, six patients were being treated, with four of them fully vaccinated. Erie Shores Healthcare reported just one patient was admitted for another complaint but tested positive.

The number of new high-risk cases and active patients is dropping in Windsor-Essex. The health unit reported 48 new cases, though the number could be an undercount. The active caseload is down to 259.

The health unit also reported a drop in the number of active outbreaks, with 13. Five are in long-term care facilities, four in the community, and two apiece in hospitals and workplaces.
