The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority will start the reconstruction of Sandwich Street this summer.
The project will include the replacement of the road and sidewalks, bike lanes, and new underground storm sewers between Ojibway Parkway and McKee Street.
Through the Community Benefits Plan, the project team is investing $1-million for streetscaping within the Sandwich Business Improvement Area.
WDBA is currently conducting a survey to determine how to best spend that $1-million allocation. The survey is available until March 7, 2022.
Phase one of the project, between McKee Road to the Ojibway Parkway will be completed this summer.
Construction will continue into the fall between Ojibway Parkway meets Sandwich Street to Chappell Street. A multi-use lain will be constructed as part of this phase.
The area of the Sandwich Street BIA will be completed in the spring of 2023.
Bridging North America is still on track to complete the new Gordie Howe International Bridge by the end of 2024.
Traffic will be maintained throughout the entire construction period. Contractors will also use measures to reduce noise, dust, and vibrations throughout the project. Vibration monitoring could include placing monitoring equipment around or inside heritage structures to track levels of vibration and prevent damage.
