The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is still evaluating whether proof of vaccination will be required at local recreational facilities after March 1.
The Ontario government announced proof of vaccination requirements will be lifted on that date, however, the health unit has its own order in effect for recreational facilities.
Currently, all facilities used for sports and recreational fitness activities in the region of Windsor-Essex are required to check for proof of vaccination for all individuals over the age of 12.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Shanker Nesathurai said the health unit is still evaluating local data to determine if the order will be rescinded.
"We continue to monitor this item and we'll have more discussion and make that determination public as we get closer to March 1," said Nesathurai.
Nesathurai worries with low uptake on booster shots in the region, many people could have waning immunity.
"A rate of 50 per cent does not provide optimal protection to the community," said Nesathurai. "I think we have a long way to go to get optimal protection for the community."
To date, 78.9 per cent of eligible individuals have had two doses of a vaccine while only 53.1 per cent of people over the age of 18 have had a booster.
The latest epidemiological report shows key COVID-19 indicators continue to decline. The case rate among high-risk individuals continues to decrease as does the number of tests coming back positive. COVID-19 hospitalizations have also decreased in the last week.
