Three more COVID-19 deaths reported in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported Friday that three more people lost their lives to COVID-19.

A man in his 60s from the community and a man and woman in their 70s living in long-term care have passed away, raising the Windsor-Essex death toll to 562.

The health unit confirmed that 163 new cases were reported in high-risk settings.

The number of patients in Windsor-Essex's three hospital systems has remained relatively stable, with a total of 70 admitted as of 3 p.m. Friday.

At Windsor Regional Hospital, there are 61 patients with COVID-19. Of those, 30 are there because of the virus, while the rest are in hospital for other reasons but have tested positive. Four of them are in the intensive care unit. The hospital said 41 of their patients are fully vaccinated, and the remaining 20 are either not or partially vaccinated.

Erie Shores Healthcare in Leamington reported a drop in hospitalizations, with seven being treated. Just three were admitted primarily for COVID-19.

Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare reported only two patients admitted on Friday, both of them fully vaccinated.

The active high-risk caseload in Windsor-Essex has fallen below the 1,000 mark, to 728.

Meanwhile, across Ontario, 517 patients with COVID-19 were in intensive care, a drop from 541 on Thursday. There are 2,634 people admitted for the virus in hospitals across the province, down from Thursday's 2,797.
