OPP urge drivers not to call 911 for road conditions

Ahead of a major snowstorm, the Ontario Provincial Police are asking drivers not to call 911 for road conditions.

First off, the OPP won't have that information, and secondly, you may be tying up the lines for those who actually need help.

Road conditions can be found on the 511 Ontario website or by following @OPP_WR or @OPP_COMM_WR on Twitter.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for much of southwestern Ontario, and before the snow flies, police want to remind motorists to drive defensively when it does.

The forecast calls for rain mixed with snow in Windsor-Essex early Wednesday morning and then snow. With the wind, drivers can expect blowing snow and poor visibility.

Police recommend filling up the gas tank on Tuesday and leaving a little earlier Wednesday morning. Other helpful tips include leaving lots of space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you and slowing down.

"Clearing your windshields fully and ensuring your vehicles are in good service and properly fueled will assist in reaching your destination," said Inspector Glenn Miller, the Detachment Commander of the Essex County OPP. "If the roadways are not good where you live, then chances are they are also not good at your destination. Avoid a collision by driving defensively or consider staying off the roads until the storm has passed and roads are clear."

Thursday is expected to be another messy day on the roads, but the snow should taper off on Friday morning.
