The Municipality of Leamington has developed a plan to construct nearly 300 affordable housing units on the former Leamington District Secondary School property.
The purchase of the property on Talbot Street West was approved by the Leamington council in July 2020. The municipality then hired Dillon Consulting to develop a concept plan for the space.
According to the plan developed by the consultants, the space would have three six-storey multi-residential buildings and 53 townhomes. The plan also provides space for a commercial area that would support the new housing development.
“Creating inclusive, attainable and affordable housing solutions is a Council priority,” said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “We’re very happy to be moving this critical project forward to help address the housing shortage in Leamington.”
Leamington council has started the process of a zoning bylaw amendment for the development to take place. It is also developing a request for proposals to find a qualified developer to purchase and develop the former high school lands in keeping with the concept plan.

It’s estimated construction of the entire project could take around 12-36 months once a developer is selected.
