The Windsor Police Service will be upgrading traffic cameras in the city thanks to a $200,000 grant from the provincial government.
The grant is part of $1 million set aside for the Ontario Closed Circuit Television Grant program.
“CCTV surveillance cameras are an essential tool in helping police detect, prevent and deter criminal activity and keep Ontarians safe,” said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones. “Tackling gun and gang violence requires all levels of government to work together. Ontario has stepped up to do its part, and we are pleased to support these locally-led initiatives to help stamp out violence in communities across the province.”
Windsor Police Chief Pam Mizuno said the funding comes at a critical time as the current cameras are quickly coming to the end of their useful life.
“By strengthening CCTV systems we would have another tool for our investigators to combat criminal activities in our local communities as well as other provincial communities,” said Mizuno.
Mizuno said existing cameras will be updated and coverage will be expanded with the funds provided through this grant.
“Key intersections and camera locations have been identified that will provide both traffic management benefits and the criminal deterrence and investigative goals of the project,” said Mizuno. “The technology of the new cameras will provide high-quality video captures, which in turn will result in an increased amount of valuable video evidence for our investigations.”
The new cameras will be installed by the City of Windsor over the next several months.
