Amherstburg council asked to sign off on rain barrel purchase

Amherstburg Town Council might approve the purchase of 100 rain barrels Monday night for the public.

The rain barrels could be sold at an Earth Day event.

By buying 100, the town can get a good deal and pass the savings on to residents.

The town's administration is recommending it to help reduce basement flooding.

"Rainwater harvesting helps to divert rain from storm drains, decrease the impact of runoff to streams, and minimize sewer overflows during heavy rainfalls," read a report to councillors.

The report said water harvested in rain barrels has an ideal pH level for plants and could be used for water lawns and gardens, topping off pools, and washing cars. Nearly 40 per cent of domestic water use during the summer months is for lawn and garden watering.

The pilot project would limit the sale of one rain barrel per property, and installation and maintenance would be up to homeowners.
