Nine tickets handed out in weekend blitz

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says its enforcement officers laid nine tickets against businesses that weren't following public health measures during a blitz last weekend.

Another 21 businesses received warnings.

Most of those tickets were for not having a safety plan, not screening customers, and not wearing eye protection.

CEO Nicole Dupuis admitted there's been some confusion over that last one.

"Where a worker is within two metres of someone not wearing a mask, they have to wear both a mask and eye protection," she said. "For example, restaurants and bars, your server are often going to be in two metres of someone not wearing a mask."

Enforcement officers and provincial offences officers made 69 visits over 12 hours.

Dupuis said the tickets were for rules that have been in place for over a year.

"To say that it's concerning would be a bit of an understatement," said Dupuis.

Once again, she asked the public to show kindness to enforcement officers who are just doing their jobs.

"There can be some difficult conversations. It's not always happy engagements and happy conversations that they're a part of when they're trying to enforce the rules," Dupuis explained.

Whenever new restrictions come into effect, the level of hostility tends to increase. Rules on capacity limits for concert and sports venues went into place last weekend just as the blitz started.

Meanwhile, the health unit reported 105 new COVID-19 cases and an additional death on Thursday.

A man in his 70s is the region's 488th fatality since the start of the pandemic.

Of the new cases, 40 remain under investigation. Another 36 are from household or close contact, 23 were community-acquired, and six are travel or outbreak-related.

The region has 547 active cases, and there are 27 people in area hospitals with the virus.

Thirty-five outbreaks continue in Windsor-Essex, with 17 of those at schools or daycare centres and two at retirement or long-term care homes.

Ontario broke a record on Thursday.  There were 5,790 new cases reported, seven deaths across the province, and there are now 32,412 active cases.
