Third phase of Cabana Road construction completed

There is a little less headache for south Windsor drivers as the latest phase of a major road reconstruction is completed.

Mayor Drew Dilkens joined Windsor Ward 1 Councillor Fred Francis and Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk Tuesday to update the Cabana Road West project. The third phase involved a reconstruction of the thoroughfare between Dougall Avenue and Dominion Boulevard.

That section of the road was widened from two to four lanes. The mayor said that helped accomplish two goals.

"We're doing this because the road needed to be upgraded in its own right, but the side benefit here is that we're also building a hospital on County Road 42, and we need to make sure that we have a safe, efficient, fast access to that hospital, and this is part of that solution," said Dilkens.

Improvements also included new buffered bike lanes, new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and lighting. There was also a new storm sewer installation, along with water main and sanitary sewer upgrades.

Funding for the third phase included over $938,000 from the federal government, along with over $738,000 from the Ontario government.

Francis said the completion of the third phase was the culmination of an effort that began years ago.

"It's one of those things where you deal with it in 2014, and in 2021 you can actually see the progress being made," said Francis. "We're almost at the finish line moving into 2022 and 2023. I know the residents are happy, and I'd like to thank the residents for their understanding and patience."

The fourth phase, which will extend the improvements from Dominion Boulevard to Highway 3, will begin in spring 2023. The fifth and final stage will rebuild the road from Walker Road to the Sixth Concession in 2024.
