Active COVID-19 cases dip and another death in Windsor-Essex

The latest death from COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex is a woman in her 90s.

She lived in a long-term care setting, and her death means 484 people have died of the virus since March 2020.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit added 63 cases to its caseload, while active ones dropped. On Monday, there were 607, but as of Tuesday morning, there were 550.

Among the new infections, community acquisition accounts for ten cases, and 16 people caught it through close contact with either someone in their home or someone else they had close contact with in recent days. Two each are outbreak or travel-related, and 33 are under investigation.

Five fewer people are under treatment for the virus in area hospitals. There are 29 cases at either Windsor Regional Hospital or Erie Shores Healthcare.

Meanwhile, the percentage of residents over five who have had both shots reached 78 per cent. The health unit said 80,139 people now have their booster.

Currently, there are 38 outbreaks in Windsor-Essex, including 17 at area schools and daycare centres. Twelve workplaces have at least two cases. The number of community outbreaks is seven, and two long-term care or retirement homes report infections. Franklin Gardens Long-Term Care Home in Leamington has eight, joining Sun Parlour Home for Senior Citizens on the list, which has two.

Across Ontario, another 3,453 cases were reported, along with 11 deaths.  The number of active cases is now 25,702.
