The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit hopes to have more information later this week, but officials confirm it will open two new mass vaccination clinics in early January.
CEO Nicole Dupuis said one would open in West Windsor and one in Leamington, possibly at the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre.
That will make three mass vaccination clinics in the region, including the existing one at Devonshire Mall.
Public health officials also hope more family doctors will offer it to their patients, and additional pop-up clinics are planned in high-priority neighbourhoods.
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, there is a pop-up clinic at the John McGivney Children's Centre from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Windsor Jewish Federation and Community Centre will host another clinic on Thursday.
The health unit has added more appointments in the coming days at the clinic at the mall. Starting Tuesday, it will have the capacity to give 3,000 people a first, second, or third shot against COVID-19 a day.
Appointments can be booked online or by calling 226-773-2200.
Those 18 and older can now book an appointment to get their third shot, so long as they had their second dose at least three months ago.
The Moderna vaccine will be offered to those 30, and Acting Medical Officer of Health Doctor Shanker Nesathurai said those who got the Pfizer shot the first two times shouldn't worry about getting a different mRNA one this time.
"If you had Pfizer for your first two doses, getting Moderna as your third dose is a perfectly good option. The whole goal is to improve immunity," he said.
Those under the age of 30 will receive a Pfizer shot for their third dose.
However, the push to get more people their booster shots means the health unit will have to sacrifice some of its ability to conduct case and contact management.
"It is up to the individuals to provide the correct information to the public health unit to follow up," said Dupuis. "The biggest difference now is that instead of us calling those individuals, we'll be asking individuals who are positive to contact their contacts themselves."
As of Monday, 74,986 residents of Windsor-Essex had received their third booster shot.
Since Friday, the health unit has confirmed 255 new cases of COVID-19. There were 73 on Saturday, 96 on Saturday, and on Monday, 86.
Of those, 79 are the result of close contact with previously confirmed infections. Another 65 people caught the virus in the community. There are three connected to outbreaks, and 111 remain under investigation.
The region has 607 active infections, and 34 people are in the hospital.
Currently, there are seventeen schools or daycare centres with outbreaks. Officials added St. Louis Catholic School to the list on Friday. The other schools are Stella Maris Catholic Elementary, St. Anne French Immersion Catholic Elementary, Our Lady of Annunciation Catholic Elementary, St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary, D.M Eagle Public, Hugh Beaton Public, Centennial Central Public, Bellewood Public, John Campbell Public, M.S. Hetherington Public - Grade 4, Gore Hill Public - Grade 1/2, Ecole Elementaire Monseigneur Jean-Noel School, Ecole Elementaire Ste Marguerite D'Youville, Maranatha Christian Academy, and Leamington District Secondary School. There is also one at Latchkey Daycare and Learning Centre.
Sun Parlour Home for Senior Citizens in Leamington also has an outbreak involving two staff members.
Five outbreaks are in the community, and there are 13 at workplaces.
Across Ontario, the province reported 3,784 new infections, no new deaths on Monday, and 23,591 active cases.
