Vaccine changes being offered Saturday in Windsor

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has announced changes to the type of COVID-19 vaccine being offered at the Devonshire Mall clinic.

The health unit and Windsor Regional Hospital said Friday evening that starting with appointments on Saturday morning, there will be changes to the type of vaccine administered.

"For those under the age of 30, based on approved usage and preferential dosing recommendations, the Pfizer vaccine will be administered," read a statement attributed to health unit CEO Nicole Dupuis and Windsor Regional Hospital CEO David Musyj. "For those 30 years of age and older, for which there is no preferential dose, the Moderna vaccine will be administered."

The statement said that the adjustments were being made due to the availability of mRNA vaccines across Ontario.

"We know that a dose of either mRNA vaccine will provide the recipient with a high level of protection against COVID-19 and the Omicron variant," read the statement. "Please do not hesitate to book your appointment for a first, second, or third dose and continue to check back at WEVAX.ca as new appointment times are added daily."

Adults 50 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 booster shot as long as they had received their second dose on or before July 2, according to the health unit. Adults 18 to 49 may begin booking appointments for boosters at the Devonshire Mall site starting Monday. The mall site does not accept walk-ins for booster shots.

As of Friday evening, the health unit's website reported that 78.8 per cent of all Windsor-Essex residents five and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
