Tecumseh ends urban hen program

The Town of Tecumseh is discontinuing its urban hen pilot project.

Since the pilot project was launched in March 2020, the town issued 13 licenses for 76 hens.

Over the last two years, town administration reported it received multiple complaints about the proper keeping of the hens, their feed, and coop. Neighbours reported the facilities were attracting rodents. As a result, three owners had their licenses revoked and re-homed their hens.

Town administration recommended ending the two-year pilot program because of the number of complaints received and the amount of staff time dedicated to responding to those complaints.

Town council voted to discontinue the program as of March 1, 2022. All current participants will be given notice and be advised to find other suitable homes for their livestock.
