The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for the region because of high winds in the forecast.
The flood watch is in effect for the Lake Erie shoreline, the Detroit River shoreline, and the Lake St. Clair shoreline west of Belle River to the City of Windsor.
According to the authority, forecasts indicate that winds from an easterly direction will continue until mid-Saturday, possibly increasing in speed Thursday night. With elevated lake levels, low-lying areas along the shorelines could see erosion and flooding.
Director of Watershed Management Services James Bryant indicated the area most likely to be impacted by these conditions is the Municipality of Leamington between Wheatley Harbour and Point Pelee National Park.
People are encouraged to take extra caution to avoid areas where flooding is occurring, as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind events.
The advisory remains in effect until noon on Saturday.
