Essex latest municipality to discuss mandatory COVID-19 vaccination

Councillors in the Town of Essex will debate bringing in a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy during a special meeting on Tuesday night.

The town is just the latest in the region to look at the option to control cases and protect staff members.

A report to the council suggests staff have until Wednesday to disclose their status.

"Staff who do not complete their declaration by October 13, 2021, will not be permitted to attend work on October 14, 2021," said the report.

Employees will have until November 17 to get both of their shots.

Those with a medical exemption will have to undergo rapid antigen testing every 72 hours, and those who do not disclose their status and refuse testing will go on an unpaid leave of absence.

"The staff member is on unpaid leave and may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination until full vaccination is reached, or staff member begins to complete rapid antigen testing," the report continued.

Vaccination policies have become the norm across the region and the country as more employers enact their own strict guidelines.
