Border officials at the Ambassador Bridge remind travellers there is no limit on how much money you can bring across the border, but you might have to declare it.
Any amount over $10,000 must be declared by filing a Report of International Transportation of Currency or Monetary Instruments whether you are entering or leaving the U.S.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Field of Operations Office in Detroit seized $200,000 early Tuesday morning from a commercial vehicle near the Ambassador Bridge.
Less than 24 hours earlier, they seized $28,000 at the same site.
"Reporting is required under the Currency and Foreign Transaction Reporting Act," said Port Director Devin Chamberlain. "Failure to report can result in civil and criminal penalties and may lead to the loss of undeclared monetary instruments."
In other words, the driver might not get the money back. They will have to prove where they got the cash and what they intend to use it for is legitimate.
The driver was released from custody, but Homeland Security is continuing its investigation.
