Windsor West returns Brian Masse to Ottawa

Windsor West NDP incumbent Brian Masse has won an eighth term.

"I'm just very grateful to be a participant and to have again reconnected and met some new people in our community and very privileged to have earned enough votes to represent this riding," Masse told BlackburnNews.com after the votes were counted.

Over 44 per cent of the ballots cast in Monday night's election were for Masse. He had 20,409 votes compared to his closest rival, Liberal Sandra Pupatello who had 12,758.

Outside a South Windsor restaurant, Pupatello was philosophical about the outcome.

"Despite the outcome tonight, I'm still saying people are demanding more, and we've got to keep demanding more," she told reporters. "Economic recovery, taking care of climate change, the Liberals really do have the best plan. Somebody's gotta be looking out for Windsor."

It was the second time Pupatello, whose political resume includes serving as Ontario's Deputy Premier during the Dalton McGuinty government, challenged Masse for the seat in Windsor West.

Conservative Anthony Orlando came in third in the race with 19.4 per cent of the vote. Behind him came Matthew Giancola of the People's Party of Canada with 8.6 per cent, and Marxist Leninist candidate Margaret Villamizar with 0.3 per cent.

Masse has held the seat in Windsor-West since 2002. Prior to that, Liberal Herb Gray held the riding over 12 consecutive elections.

In the last election, there was a 55.3 per cent turnout.

Elections Canada estimates around 12,588 people voted in Windsor-West in the advanced polls held last week. That's around 40 per cent more than the 2019 advanced poll turnout.
