Slight decrease in active COVID-19 cases in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 46 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

The number of active cases in the community went down slightly, to 486. Of those, 341 involve a variant of concern.

Among the new infections reported Thursday, 16 are close contacts of previously confirmed cases, nine are community-acquired, four are outbreak-related, and one case is travel-related. Case and contact management staff continue to investigate 16 cases.

Local hospitals are currently treating 14 people who have tested positive for the virus. There are five patients in the ICU at Windsor Regional Hospital and four of them are unvaccinated.

The health unit is monitoring 19 outbreaks in the region. There are 16 workplace outbreaks and three community outbreaks.

To date, 72.4 per cent of eligible residents in Windsor-Essex are fully vaccinated.

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
