Child care spaces added at Windsor Catholic school

An expansion of the child care centre at Windsor's St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School has the green light from the province to move ahead.

The Ontario government announced it approved the tender on Wednesday.

The $2.1-million investment is part of its capital investment program to add more child care spaces across the province. It is spending up to $1-billion to create 30,000 new child care spaces over the next five years.

The centre on Chandler Road will have four additional child care rooms and 73 new licensed child care spaces.

"These new child care spaces at St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School will come as welcome news to the working families of our community," said Chair of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board Fulvio Valentinis.

"Child care is critically important to working parents. By funding the construction of additional child care spaces at St. Teresa of Calcutta, our government is delivering access to more choice and real support to Windsor families," said Education Minister Stephen Lecce.

The government is also boosting support for parents re-entering the workforce but increasing Childcare Access and Relief from Expenses tax credit from an average of $1,250 to $1,500 per family this year.
