Speeding stop leads to drug related charges

A 31-year-old Leamington man is facing several charges after speeding in a construction zone while workers were present.

Essex County OPP say an officer on patrol observed the man speeding in a construction zone on Highway 3 Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, a traffic stop was initiated and the driver was found to be in possession of cannabis. The driver was arrested and a search revealed a large amount of suspected cannabis, opioids, drug trafficking paraphernalia, and cash.

The man was charged with possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession for the purpose of distributing, possession of over 30 grams of cannabis in a public place, possession of illicit cannabis, driving a vehicle with cannabis readily available, and speeding in a construction zone with workers present.

The driver has been released from custody with a future court date on September 27.
