The health unit reported 48 new COVID-19 cases in the region, up from 37 on Tuesday. The number of COVID-19 deaths in Windsor-Essex remained unchanged at 438.

Three of the new cases are close contacts of someone with a confirmed case, and one was picked up in the community. The remaining 44 new cases are under investigation.

The number of active COVID-19 patients increased Wednesday from 388 to 408. However, the number of active patients battling a variant of concern was stable, at 178.

The health unit reported a total of 13 COVID-19 patients being treated in the region's three hospital systems. There are eight active outbreaks in the region's workplaces. One additional outbreak, linked to a wedding, is in the community.

As of Wednesday, the health unit said 71.3 per cent of eligible Windsor-Essex residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. For those with just one dose, the percentage sits at 78.5.

For those needing one or both COVID-19 vaccine doses, walk-in appointments are available at the former Sears store at Devonshire Mall, from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m every day.

Meanwhile, Ontario reported 660 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, an increase from the 486 new infections counted the day before. One patient provincewide has passed away.
