Active cases climb as Windsor-Essex hits vaccine milestone

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Windsor-Essex has climbed above 300 as the region hit an important vaccine milestone.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported another 56 cases on Wednesday, bringing the active number of cases up to 316. Among the active cases, 106 involve a variant of concern.

The region hit an important vaccine milestone with 70.1 per cent of the eligible population now fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

There are currently seven people in the hospital who have tested positive for the virus. According to Windsor Regional Hospital, four of them are unvaccinated.

A COVID-19 outbreak involving the Delta variant has been identified at the Village at St. Clair long-term care home. Three staff members have tested positive for the virus. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said the outbreak involves both vaccinated and non vaccinated individuals. No infections have been identified among residents.

Another COVID-19 outbreak has been linked to a wedding in the community. The wedding took place at St. Anne's Parish in Tecumseh and the Pelee Island Winery in Kingsville. The Delta variant has been linked to the outbreak. At least 20 cases have been linked to this outbreak however Dr. Ahmed said the individuals are from different jurisdictions so all of the infections may not be captured in that number.

"Overall, yes it is a concern but it's not a surprise. We know that when cases increase you will see outbreaks, you will see people getting hospitalized and unfortunately some of the most severe consequences we will see as well," said Dr. Ahmed.

There are another five outbreaks at workplaces throughout the community.
