Government again floats improved rail service for Windsor

The federal government is looking at improving passenger rail service in Windsor.

Ottawa has already announced new high-frequency rail services between Toronto and Quebec City and is considering whether the stretch between Toronto and Windsor can be integrated with the plan.

The government is working with VIA Rail and the Canada Infrastructure Bank through the High-Frequency Rail Joint Project Office to make that determination. It is also reaching out to the provincial government to avoid duplication of services.

"There is a strong appetite for enhanced passenger rail services in Southwestern Ontario," said Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra on Thursday. "Improvements to passenger rail service in this region would provide better options for travellers while also enabling the economic growth of communities along the rail network."

Alghabra announced the improvements in the Toronto to Quebec City corridor last month. The project could reduce travel times and make trains more reliable.

It's not the first time improvements in Windsor have been floated. The idea has been studied repeatedly, and the previous Liberal provincial government introduced a plan to introduce a high-speed rail service between Windsor and Guelph before it quietly died.
