The head coach of the Windsor Spitfires is headed back to the National Hockey League.
The club confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Trevor Letowski has accepted a position as an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens. Letowski will be working under Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme.
"The NHL is the premier professional ice hockey league in the world and to be selected as a coach at this level is a tribute to Trevor’s capabilities," read a statement from the Spitfires Wednesday.
Letowski had been with the Spits organization for six seasons, first as an assistant coach under Rocky Thompson, winning the 2017 Memorial Cup. He was then promoted to the head coaching job after Thompson left the team to coach the AHL Chicago Wolves.
"I want to express my appreciation to the Windsor Spitfires organization for the opportunity to coach this program the past six years," said Letowski in a media release. "I have truly come to love this city and will always feel like a part of this community. I was afforded a new opportunity I couldn’t pass up but it doesn’t make it easy to leave. I will miss the tight-knit group of coaches, staff and players we have built here as well as the amazing fans."
The former NHL defenceman had also previously been the head coach with the Sarnia Sting.
The search for a new head coach in Windsor is expected to begin shortly.
