Flood shuts down cardiac cath lab for the rest of the month

Flooding at the Ouellette Campus of Windsor Regional Hospital has shut down its cardiac catheterization lab for the rest of July.

Windsor Regional Hospital issued a notice regarding the closure Tuesday morning, four days after the sub-basement and basement at the downtown facility flooded in a deluge that filled basements across the region.

"Any emergency and/or in-patients who would normally receive treatment at the Cath Lab will be diverted to other hospitals outside of our region," read the notice from Manager of Corporate Communications, Steve Erwin. "Roughly 40 patients scheduled for non-emergency Cath Lab procedures in the month of July are being notified."

Based on historical data, the hospital anticipates as many as 50 in-patients and 12 emergency cases will be transferred to centres in London and Detroit.

The lab is used for medical intervention during heart attacks and elective angiograms and angioplasties for out-patients.
