Windsor man arrested on theft and assault charges

Windsor police say a man was charged after allegedly stealing a motorcycle, then assaulting an officer.

It happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Police responded to a complaint about a motorcycle theft, which took place in the area of Russell Street and Brock Street. The suspect had run from the scene after being confronted by a witness.

At around 8 a.m., an officer spotted the suspect in the area of University Avenue West and Josephine Avenue. When the officer tried to take the suspect into custody, the man struck the officer with a closed fist, according to Constable Darius Goze. The man continued to resist arrest before being subdued by several other officers who appeared on the scene.

Both the officer and suspect suffered minor injuries in the scuffle.

The 53-year-old Windsor man is charged with theft over $5,000, assaulting a peace officer, and resisting arrest. These charges have not been proven in court.

The Major Crime Unit continues to investigate this matter. Anyone with information is asked to call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4830, or ext. 4000 after-hours. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
