United Way gears up to help low-income students come September

The kids may be blissfully enjoying their summer, but the United Way is already looking ahead to September.

The agency has launched its annual Backpacks for Success drive with hopes of filling 1,000 backpacks with school supplies for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 living in low-income families.

"It's been a challenging year for children and youth as they navigate their education during a pandemic," said CEO Lorraine Goddard. "We hope that having the supplies they need to succeed in school will mean one less barrier for students and families come September."

Donors have a couple of options. They can donate $25 for one backpack filled with new supplies, or they can drop off new and unused backpacks, books, and supplies at the United Way's office on Giles Boulevard East. The office is open Mondays in July from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and on Fridays from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. The agency advises donors to call ahead at 519-259-6164 or email azuccato@weareunited.com.

Students will get backpacks through existing United Way programs and other non-profit partners in the community.
