Cause of Lakeshore wheat fire to be determined

The Lakeshore Fire Department is still investigating the cause of a major wheat fire earlier this week.

Firefighters were called around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to a wheat field on Rochester Town Line near Highway 401 in St. Joachim, according to Deputy Fire Chief Jason Suchiu.

"The wheat was in the process of being taken off the field at the time of the fire," said Suchiu in an email to BlackburnNewsWindsor.com. "There was a building on the property which firefighters were able to protect, and there was no damage to the building or any farm equipment."

The fire created what appeared to be a spectacular curtain of smoke and flames that stretched across the field, which was about 75 acres in size. Suchiu said the size of the fire required a proportionate response.

"Due to the size of the fire and lack of water, we had 15 firefighters and several apparatus respond from two of our Lakeshore stations to assist with extinguishing the fire and protecting the adjacent field, which took us approximately one and a half hours," said Suchiu.

A thunderstorm eventually rolled through to put out any remaining hot spots. No injuries were reported.

Suchiu said the department is still collecting information to determine the cause of the fire and a damage estimate.
