The provincial and federal governments are giving two Essex County municipalities some help paying for major sewer projects.
It is part of a $29-million announcement made Monday by Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Catherine McKenna. Across Ontario, 19 infrastructure projects will be financially supported.
"Green infrastructure, especially water infrastructure, is vital for community well-being and safety," she said. "Today's investment -- will support better water management systems, increase protection from flooding and other environmental threats, and help create more sustainable and modern water infrastructure for thousands of residents."
The federal government is contributing $16-million of the total, and municipalities that won the grants are putting up another $14-million.
Amherstburg will get a total of $1.7-million from senior governments to reconstruct the sanitary system along three streets in its historic core. It should reduce the potential for basement flooding on George and Seymour Streets. The town is contributing $623,411 to the project.
In Leamington, 1.2-kilometres of combined sewers will be replaced with separate storm and sanitary mains as part of the Sherk Sewer Separation Program. It should increase capacity at the sewage treatment plant. Leamington will kick in $579,312 towards the project which will impact residents on Audrey, Margaret, Jane, Clair and Sherk Street.
