Health unit raises alarm over opioid overdoses

The heath unit in Windsor-Essex is raising concerns over a high number of opioid overdoses that occurred last month.

During the seven-day period of  June 21-27, there were 26 emergency visits to regional hospitals due to substance use, seven of which were overdoses. The majority of emergency hospital visits were fentanyl-related, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit said.

The health unit added that eight of those emergency department visits took place during a single day on June 27, and four of them were overdoses.

Additionally, there were 15 EMS calls involving substance use received between June 24 and June 27.

The health unit said it is working together with other local agencies to monitor this increase and work to understand more about these reported cases.
