Second dose eligibility expanding Saturday in Windsor-Essex

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, all adults in Windsor-Essex who received at mRNA vaccine on or before June 2 will be eligible to receive their second dose.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit estimates there are around 80,000 local residents among this group.

CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette is urging everyone to be patient and not to rush on the website as soon as the eligibility opens.

“We do want people to book, and we always hope for the best, but the possibility of a [website] crash has become a little bit of our reality,” said Marentette.

Marentette is also encouraging residents to take advantage of the many walk-in vaccination clinics being hosted by primary health care providers throughout the region.

“Get vaccinated, first and second doses, when you are eligible, when you are able, and just see it through. Spread the news and help others get vaccinated too,” said Marentette.

Students and youth are not eligible for the shortened time frame and will have to wait an eight week period before booking a second dose.

For those students who have not yet booked their first dose, the health unit is hosting dedicated youth time slots next week at three mass vaccination sites. Between 11 a.m. to 12 noon on June 29 and 30, children and youth 12 to 17 years of age will be able to book an appointment to receive their first Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. Appointments can be booked at the WFCU Centre, Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre or the Libro Credit Union Centre through wevax.ca.
