Daily vaccine record smashed in Windsor-Essex

A single-day vaccine record was broken Tuesday, after over 6,675 vaccines were administered throughout Windsor and Essex County.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said 84 per cent of the doses given out were second doses.

“We are making good progress in giving out second doses in our community,” he said. “I wanted to acknowledge the good work that is happening everywhere and how important it is for us as a community to work together to do the right thing for our community.”

On average, around 4,000 vaccine doses are given out daily in the community through mass vaccination sites, pharmacies, and primary health care providers. To date, 71.9 per cent of adults in the region have been partially vaccinated and 15.5 per cent are fully vaccinated.  Earlier this week, the health unit reported 73 per cent of adults had received their first dose, but CEO and Cheif Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette said the figure has been adjusted slightly after a data clean-up by staff which eliminated some duplications in the system.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has now expanded second dose eligibility. Anyone who received the first dose of a Pfizer of Moderna on or before April 18 can now book their second dose. All residents 70 years and older who got their first shot more than 28 days ago are also eligible to book a second dose.

Residents who received an AstraZeneca vaccine can get the second dose twelve weeks after their first dose.  They can choose to get another AstraZeneca vaccine or an mRNA vaccine.

All residents 12 years and older can book an appointment for their first dose through wevax.ca.

On Wednesday morning, the health units reported 13 new cases of COVID-19. It also reported one additional death in the region connected to the virus. A man in his 60s became the 432nd person to die in Windsor-Essex after contracting COVID-19.

There are 147 active cases in the community now and 60 of them have been identified as involving variants of concern.

Local hospitals are treating 16 patients who are positive for COVID-19 and three of them are in the intensive care unit.
