Environment Canada has issued an extreme heat warning for Windsor and Essex County.
Daytime high temperatures of 31 and 32 C are expected on Saturday and Sunday. The heat event could also last until early next week. Nighttime low temperatures are not expected to go below 21 C.
The weather service says the humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality.
With the heat warning in effect, the City of Windsor will open a temporary cooling centre for residence in the atrium of the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre. Tables and chairs will be set up to ensure physical distancing requirements are met. All attendees will have to take a COVID-19 screening and will be required to wear a mask at all times.
The site will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. while the heat warning is in effect.
The Housing, Homelessness Help Hub day program at Windsor Water World also remains open and available for individuals in the community who are experiencing homelessness. This location, while providing shelter from the heat, also allows for more physical distancing within our shelter system. The program is open, with capacity limits, seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit advises people should drink plenty of fluids, look for cool, shaded areas or air conditioned spaces and limit outdoor activities during the hottest times of the day to avoid heat-related illnesses.
