WECHU reports 14 new infections

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 14 new COVID-19 infections today, but due to a recent data clean up there was only an increase of two cases overall.

“This is just a one day number. We know how quickly things can change. Please, please continue to follow public health measures until we see a consistent decline in the cases,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed. “We have been seeing some decline in the last week or so and we would like to see that trend continue.”

Since March 2020, there have been 16,592 COVID-19 cases reported in Windsor Essex. There are now 165 active infections in the community and 91 of them involve a variant of concern.

The health unit is monitoring seven active outbreaks in the community. One outbreak is at the Southwest Detention Centre and the remainder are linked to workplaces.

Local hospitals are treating 13 patients from Windsor-Essex for COVID-19 and five of those are in the intensive care unit.

To date, 71.7 per cent of adults in the region have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 9.5 per cent of adults have received two doses.

Local pharmacies should be receiving more doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine this week. The province has also recently announced that individuals who received AstraZeneca as their first dose can receive a Pfizer of Moderna vaccine 12 weeks after their initial dose. Starting on June 7 the health unit will have a pathway on its website for individuals to book their appointments.
