COVID-19 caseload drops below 300

The COVID-19 caseload in Windsor-Essex dropped below 300 as the Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 13 new cases on Wednesday.

It also reported two more deaths associated with COVID-19 in the region. Two women in their 60s recently passed away after contracting the virus. The health unit could not confirm if the cases involved variants of concern or if either woman had received a vaccine. There have been 426 deaths linked to COVID-19 in the region.

There are now 297 active infections in the area and 159 of them involve a variant.

Over 67 per cent of adults in Windsor-Essex are now partially vaccinated while only 4.6 per cent have received both doses.

The health unit has also identified another 1,880 people who were vaccinated outside of Ontario. Over 89 per cent of them have already received both doses.

The health unit has now added a waitlist on its booking site for residents 70 years and older who received their first dose before March 31, 2021. Residents who sign up on the waitlist could be called toward the end of the day if there are vaccines available due to missed appointments. There will be a new waitlist for each day.

All residents aged 12 and older can now book an appointment through the health unit website at wevax.ca.
