Rescuers kept busy in local waters over holiday weekend

Windsor police dealt with two separate incidents of people in the water over the Victoria Day weekend.

Rescuers were still at work Monday looking for a man who disappeared off Sandpoint Beach on Saturday afternoon. Police got a call shortly after 5 p.m. about a person in the water.

Windsor police's Marine Unit searched along with the Canadian Coast Guard and a vessel from the U.S. Coast Guard station in Detroit. The search was stopped Sunday and resumed Monday.

No further details on that incident have been given.

Meanwhile, Windsor police received a call Sunday afternoon about kayakers in distress off the area of Riverside Drive East and Riverdale Avenue, near the Windsor Yacht Club. When they arrived on the scene around 12:30 p.m., they found two people in the water.

Investigators say the pair was scared but otherwise unhurt.
