Youth aged 12-17 with high risk or at risk health conditions can now book an appointment at one of the Windsor region’s mass vaccination sites.
Only the Pfizer vaccine has been approved for this age group. The person receiving the vaccine must be at least 12 years of age at the time of their appointment.
In addition to the youth with health conditions, eligibility also opened for all residents 18 plus and youth aged 16 and older working in identified essential services. To book an appointment or view current eligibility criteria go to wevax.ca.
The health unit expects all individuals in this group who want a vaccine will be able to get an appointment by the end of June.
All youth ages 12-17 will become eligible for the vaccine at the end of May.
As of Tuesday morning, 60 per cent of adults living in Windsor-Essex had received at least one dose. Only 3.5 per cent of the total population has received both doses.
The health unit reported 16 new cases of COVID-19 in the region on Tuesday. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said he is hopeful this low number will become a trend as more people are vaccinated.
“The only way to contain it is when everyone is protected. Then, the virus will not have any viable host and the transmission will stop. That’s the goal and I want to encourage everyone to get the vaccine,” said Ahmed.
There are currently 335 active cases of COVID-19 in the region and over half of them involve a variant of concern.
