Two fires in Belle River keep firefighters busy

Firefighters in Lakeshore have been kept busy with not just one but two fires in the past 24 hours.

The first was on Deer Creek Boulevard in Belle River. The second was in a rail yard near County Road 22 just south of the town.

Around 10:50 a.m. Sunday, neighbours living near the home on Deer Creek Boulevard called the fire department after noticing flames coming from the house. They managed to rescue three dogs, but the home is destroyed.

Lakeshore Fire Chief Don Williamson told BlackburnNews.com the house was just recently sold, and the one person living there was not home at the time.

He said it started on an attached deck, spread up the vinyl siding and into the attic. By the time firefighters arrived, flames were shooting from the roof.

The fire is still under investigation. There is no word yet what started it, and so far, no damage estimate.

Around 10 p.m., firefighters were called out again, this time after a pile of railroad ties went up flames.

Williamson said the pile was quite large, about 100 feet in length and ten feet high.

It was in an area where trains shunt cars.

Investigators are still looking for the cause of that fire.
