OPP urge residents to speak with their loved ones about fraud

Provincial police in Kingsville remind residents a credit card company would never call you and demand that you buy gift cards.

Police said a resident was almost had by a fraudster on Sunday when they got a call from someone claiming they were with a credit card company. They said the person's credit card was compromised and should buy some Google Play cards and send them to the caller.

The victim was at the store buying the cards when an alert employee caught on and called the police.

The OPP encourages businesses, retirement and long-term care facilities, banks, social services, and family members to talk with seniors about fraud.

They said it is never a good plan to give out personal information over the phone, through email, or over the internet. Often, if an offer is too good to be true, it is. Protect your PIN and passwords, and don't let anyone bully you into revealing your information.

Anyone with information about this incident or any other can call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or leave a tip online at www.catchcrooks.com.
