Members of the RCMP Marine Operations Unit at the Windsor Detachment pulled a kayaker out of the Detroit River just in the nick of time.
The water was just 7.3 C, and the man was starting to lose control of his limbs.
The officers were patrolling the waters near Peche Island early Sunday afternoon when they came upon a man in the river after his kayak had overturned. The second man in a kayak was trying to help him.
The 33-year-old man was pulled from the water and warmed up inside the cabin of the police boat.
Both kayakers were wearing their life jackets, and police believe that likely saved the man's life.
The RCMP reminds people the Detroit River is still very cold, and anyone in the water could lose the ability to swim or tread water in minutes.
In addition to life jackets, police suggest bringing a whistle in case you need to attract attention to yourself.
