ICU admissions hit new high province-wide

Thursday is another record-breaking day for the number of patients in intensive care with COVID-19.

Ontario Health reported 884 patients are in intensive care units across the province. Of those, 620 people are on a ventilator.

There are 2,248 Ontario residents in the hospital now with the virus.

The province also reported another 3,871 new cases boosting the total caseload to 459,477 since the pandemic began. The active caseload is 38,438.

Across Ontario, 41 people have died of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 44 new cases Thursday morning. Of those, public health officials are still investigating where 13 people were infected. They know another 13 got it in the community, while 11 got it from having close contact with someone else who has a confirmed case of the virus. Seven are related to one of the region's 17 current outbreaks.

Across the region, there are 435 active cases, and 19 patients are in a local hospital.

The health unit is also closing in on a milestone for administering doses of vaccine against COVID-19. So far, over 148,000 have gone into people's arms, and over 13,000 residents have had both shots.
