An alert is issued in Windsor-Essex due to a recent increase in opioid overdoses.
The Windsor-Essex Community Opioid and Overdose Strategy (WECOSS), the monitoring system of the health unit, reported Wednesday evening that there was a rise in overdoses for the period between April 19 and April 25.
Eight total overdoses were reported, with six of them involving fentanyl. These overdoses mostly occurred in the city of Windsor.
"Based on our comparisons to previous years for this week, these numbers are high and warrant a community alert," said WECOSS in a media release.
No additional details on these overdoses are being released, though the WECOSS partners continue to monitor the cases.
Partners under WECOSS include the health unit, Windsor police, LaSalle police, the OPP, Erie Shores Healthcare, Windsor Regional Hospital, and Essex-Windsor EMS.
