The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 53 new cases of COVID-19 in the region on Monday.
There are now 424 people with active infections, of which 124 have been identified as variants of concern. To date, there have been 301 cases identified as variants out of 14,438 confirmed cases.
There are currently six people being treated for COVID-19 in local hospitals. Of those, five are in the intensive care unit.
The health unit is monitoring 10 active outbreaks in the community including three at schools, five at workplaces and two in community facilities.
Vaccine clinics and pharmacies in the region have administered 117,385 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to residents. As of Monday morning, 104,925 people had received at least one dose.
Residents 60 and older can book an appointment online through wevax.ca. Residents 50 and older in hot spot areas are also eligible to book an appointment. The eligibility criteria are not expected to be expanded for at least a couple of weeks.
"We already know that the appointments are very quickly filled up based on the projected vaccine supply and it will take us a few weeks for us to get to the current priorities," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.
At the same time, the clinics continue to vaccinate individuals identified by their primary care provider as high risk. Special education workers for local school boards have also been identified and are receiving vaccines this week.
