The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is reminding people to keep their number of close contacts low as it reports 54 new cases of COVID-19 in the region.
Among the new cases identified, 20 were close contacts of previously confirmed infections.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed indicates the rest of the province has hit the third wave and residents need to do their part to keep infections low.
"This particular wave is hitting the younger people more, and it is coming fast and it is leading to more ICU admissions," said Dr. Ahmed.
Local hospitals are currently treating 14 patients who have the virus. Four of those are in the intensive care unit.
There are now 329 active cases in the community.
To date, 78,615 Windsor Essex residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine.
Dr. Ahmed said even those who are vaccinated should be taking steps to reduce their number of close contacts.
"The current guidelines, the current restrictions continue to be in place and there is no guidance for people who have received their vaccinations. So, even if you've received a vaccination the same level of restrictions and the same level of precaution are applicable to you," said Dr. Ahmed.
The health unit continues to vaccinate residents who are 70 and older. To book an appointment visit weVax.ca.
