COVID-19 clusters linked to funerals

The health unit in the Winsor area is reminding people to maintain public health measures, even in the most difficult scenarios.

Over the last few weeks, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit has investigated three clusters of COVID-19 cases linked to funerals.

"It's really difficult when you're together not to comfort someone by moving closer. But having a mask on is not necessarily the only measure, it's the distancing as well and adhering to those limits and not gathering afterwards," said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette.

On Tuesday, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit also reported 28 new cases of the virus. Among the new infections, 10 are considered close-contacts of previous cases, seven are community-acquired, and 11 are still under investigation.

There are now 291 active cases. Local hospitals are treating 19 patients for COVID-19. Of those, five are in the intensive care unit.

The health unit also reported another COVID-19 related death on Tuesday. A man in his 60s, who lived in a long-term care hom, passed away after contracting the virus. This is the 403rd death in the region.

"This particular individual had a long history of illness and had been hospitalized back and forth a couple of times and had a number of medical complications attached to his medical history," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

There are no current COVID-19 outbreaks at any local long-term care or retirement home.
