WECHU reports 8 new cases

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported eight new cases of COVID-19 on Monday.

Among the new cases, five are close contacts of confirmed cases, one is related to an outbreak, one is community-acquired, and one is still being investigated.

"It's a good number today but we know that it can change very quickly. So people are asked to continue to be diligent with the public health measures," said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette.

The health unit also reported one new death in the region. A woman in her 80s passed away after contracting COVID-19. To date, 398 residents of Windsor-Essex have died after contracting the virus.

Since March 2020, the region has had 13,413 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 292 cases remain active. Local hospitals are treating 32 patients with the virus, six are in ICU.

There have been 44,334 vaccine doses administered in the region by the health unit, Windsor Regional Hospital and local pharmacies.

Over 15,000 people aged 80 and over have pre-registered for a vaccine through the health unit's system. The health unit expects to have all of those individuals vaccinated by the end of March.  The health unit continues to use its own system for registering individuals despite the provincial system being launched on Monday.

Starting on March 22, the vaccine clinic at the St. Clair College Sportsplex and the downtown Windsor University of Windsor site will be administering vaccines to the 80 plus population as well. All vaccine clinics operate by appointment only.
